K-State Foundation officials on Tuesday announced preliminary numbers for its planned Edge 3.0 development, which they said is projected to bring in $28 million in annual visitor spending.

Manhattan city commissioners pressed foundation president and CEO Greg Willems Tuesday for more details, such as the city’s share of tax-increment financing and how the project would affect existing city investments in the North Campus Corridor.

Willems presented Edge 3.0 as a $304-million development that would include the Champions Gate area, research and innovation facilities and housing. The proposed Champions Gate development would include five-story condominiums, a roughly 140-room hotel, a brewery, restaurants and flexible commercial space.

The Kansas Court of Appeals on Tuesday are hearing arguments at the K-State Alumni Association regarding a Manhattan man charged with drug-related crimes in Geary County.

Tuesday’s arguments, starting at 9:30 a.m., concern the case of Joseph Frank Fabre, 61, who in 2023 received Geary County charges for possession of fentanyl and cocaine with intent to distribute it, two counts of no drug tax stamp and driving with an obstructed license plate.

Four years ago Kansas State University’s enrollment dipped below 20,000 for the first time since 1988. Since then, it has slowly increased and continues that trend this year.

K-State President Richard Linton announced Friday during his state of the university address that enrollment has risen 7.96% since he took office in February 2022.

It seems the wait for Call Hall ice cream on K-State’s campus will be a bit longer still.

While the university’s Western Star Global Grain and Food Center is scheduled to open its doors Sept. 18, a K-State representative told News Radio KMAN on Thursday that the dairy bar housed within will likely not open until spring.

The Kansas Board of Regents this week approved tuition rate increases at five of the state’s six universities, including an increase of 4% at Kansas State University. For the average full-time student, that would be an increase of $212 per semester to $5,513 for the 2026-27 school year.

Over 10 years, the increase for K-State students is 24.3%.

Several storage buildings were destroyed in an early Wednesday morning  fire near the Kansas State University Dairy Unit, prompting a large response from local emergency agencies.

Riley County Fire District No. 1 and the Manhattan Fire Department were dispatched at approximately 4:05 a.m. after a passerby reported a structure fire near the dairy unit. As crews arrived, firefighters observed heavy flames coming from multiple storage buildings north of the Kansas State University campus.

A total of 42 units responded to the scene, including volunteer firefighters and personnel from Riley County Fire District No. 1, the Manhattan Fire Department, Kansas State University Police Department and Riley County Emergency Medical Services.

No injuries to people or animals were reported.

Several storage buildings and their contents were destroyed. Officials have not yet determined a damage estimate.

The Kansas State Fire Marshal and Kansas State University Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the fire.

As of Thursday morning, grain and feed storage bins continued to smolder. The Manhattan Fire Department has cleared the scene, but Riley County Fire District No. 1 personnel and volunteers are expected to remain for several hours to extinguish remaining hot spots and conduct mop-up operations. Kansas State University staff are assisting with debris removal using heavy equipment.

“We are concerned about the high winds today and blowing embers to other parts of the surrounding K-State North Farm,” Riley County Emergency Services Director and Fire Chief Russel Stukey said. “We’ll stay on scene as long as needed to help ensure that doesn’t happen.”

“The university appreciates the prompt and continued response by all emergency services involved,” said Michelle Geering, spokesperson for Kansas State University.

City commissioners will vote next week on establishing funding districts for Kansas State University Foundation’s Edge District.

As previously reported by The Mercury, the commission last month agreed to vote on establishing a sales tax and revenue (STAR) bond district for the Edge District and a tax increment financing (TIF) district for Champion’s Gate.
