The local branch of the NAACP this week called on K-State to take action after an unidentified person appeared on campus reportedly wearing blackface and holding a sign with a racial slur.

A photo sent by the group showed a person sitting on Bosco Student Plaza next to a sign that said, “Say (n-word) win candy.” (The sign used the full slur.) It was not clear from the photo who the person was or whether the person was a student.

Kansas State University on Wednesday announced Annette O’Connor’s hiring as the next College of Veterinary Medicine dean effective Aug. 2.

O’Connor will serve as the college’s chief academic and administrative officer, leading its academic work, research efforts and service to the state. K-State officials said she will work closely with the campus community and partners across Kansas to keep the college moving forward while continuing to build on the university’s Next-Gen K-State strategic plan.

The annual Chester Peterson Jr. public lecture series offered Kansas State University students and faculty the chance to hear from a Nobel Prize-winning physicist.

Eric Cornell, a physics professor at the University of Colorado, discussed uncovering cosmic fossils within a lab setting. In his lecture, “Looking for Fossils of the Big Bang in the Laboratory,” he offered a fresh perspective on the universe’s first moments.

A top K-State official will soon be president of North Dakota State University.

Marshall Stewart, executive vice president for external engagement and chief of staff at Kansas State University, will be the 16th president of NSDU, the school announced Monday, following selection by the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education. Stewart will assume the role on May 28, succeeding Interim President Rick Berg.

Following his tenure as interim dean, Dan Moser was made the permanent Eldon Gideon Dean of K‑State’s College of Agriculture on Sunday.

“Dean Moser knows how to get the best out of K‑State’s network of promising students, world-leading agricultural researchers and change-making alumni, because he’s long been among them,” said Jesse Perez Mendez, provost and executive vice president. “We’re setting a standard as a next-generation land-grant university, and Dean Moser’s leadership will ensure the College of Agriculture is a crucial component of that work.”

A transgender professor is suing K-State for more than $300,000 because he says the university discriminated against him because of his gender identity and sex. A United States District Court judge ordered on Feb. 25 that the case partially move forward.

In a complaint filed April in federal court, Harlan Weaver, a professor in K-State’s Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies, alleges discrimination and retaliation on the basis of sex. He said the university and two faculty members now in other departments treated him disparately because of his sex and gender identity.

A member of the Kansas State University men’s basketball coaching staff pleaded not guilty to disorderly conduct Friday, during his first appearance in Riley County District Court.

Mark Randall Vital Jr., 29, of Manhattan was arrested Feb. 9 at 12:20 a.m. and released the same day on a $2,000 bond.

Manhattan city commissioners on Tuesday will decide whether they support further development of Kansas State University’s Edge District.

The Kansas State University Foundation is asking that the commission consider using publicly accessible financial tools to help facilitate improvements on the north side of campus.

Abby Stark thinks K-State can do more to prevent sexual assaults and promote student involvement to support victims like her.

Stark, 20, from Minnesota, is a sophomore at K-State. Last year, she was navigating a trial in which she claimed a fellow student, Dylan Zeller, 19 of Leawood, sexually assaulted her. He was charged with rape and aggravated sexual battery but just before jury deliberation reached a plea deal with prosecutors. He pleaded no contest to two counts of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm.

Following a national search, Kansas State University announced its appointment of Ashfaq Khokhar as dean of the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering, effective Aug. 2.

“Dr. Khokhar brings exceptional leadership experience, growth-minded vision and high-quality teaching, research and engagement to K-State in the role of dean for the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering,” said Jesse Perez Mendez, provost and executive vice president. “I look forward to working with him to advance the college and university’s strategic vision.”
