Manhattan City Park was the site of the 10th annual C. Clyde Jones 5K and Midge’s Mile Saturday.
Participants gathered to show support for Shepherd’s Crossing, which is also celebrating its 20th anniversary. Development Officer and event namesake C. Clyde Jones says the event has evolved over the past decade and now allows people to participate virtually, a result of the COVID pandemic last year.
Melanie Horton, Administrative Assistant to the Dean in the K-State College of Business Administration, pointed out that the virtual option has enabled the event’s reach to spread beyond Kansas, even extending overseas.
In the past decade, Jones estimates the 5K run, which raises money for those in dire financial circumstances, has raised over $200,000.
Shepherd’s Crossing Executive Director Beth Klug says COVID has added another layer to that need, which continues throughout the community.
The event has become one of the more well known 5Ks in Manhattan and brings out hundreds each year. As an extra incentive this year, Hy-Vee presented a drawing for 10 months’ worth of grocery gift cards.
