In an effort to help farmers and ranchers strengthen their operations, diversify revenue and improve land health, The Nature Conservancy and partners announced Wednesday the Expanding Agroforestry Project.

Eligible agricultural producers throughout the 30-state project area — including Kansas — can apply for financial and technical support to adopt agroforestry practices — the intentional integration of trees and shrubs with crops and livestock.

City commissioners next week will determine whether they plan to establish a property tax that exceeds the revenue-neutral rate. If they do, the commission will set a public hearing related to the matter for 6 p.m. Sept. 15 at City Hall.

The revenue-neutral rate is the tax rate for the current tax year that would generate the same property tax revenue as levied in the previous tax year using the current tax year’s total assessed valuation.

After a brief legal review, the Riley County Commission on Thursday approved BHS Construction’s bid to remodel a county building for information technology and geographic information systems (IT/GIS) offices.

Commissioners asked for a review after Schultz Construction of Manhattan — the apparent low bidder — didn’t include a required contractors’ qualification statement. BHS of Manhattan was the only bidder of three to provide the statement.

Rev. Michael Goldade, who was raised in St. Marys, was one of the four Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) priests elevated to bishop in Wednesday’s Episcopal Consecration service in Écône, Switzerland.

But by Thursday, he and the other priests were excommunicated by the Vatican, which also warned that people who “formally adhere” to the SSPX priests would also be excommunicated.

A 23-year-old man suffered serious injuries after being struck by an SUV Wednesday morning near the intersection of K-113 and Anderson Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:39 a.m. July 1 on the southbound K-113 entrance ramp from Anderson Avenue.

Troopers said a 2016 Ford Flex, driven by 23-year-old Khiara A. Lawrence of Junction City, was traveling southbound on the entrance ramp when, for an unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway to the west and struck a pedestrian who was running southbound on the shoulder of the ramp.

The pedestrian, identified as 23-year-old Marco V. Retamoza of Garden City, was transported to Stormont Vail Hospital with suspected serious injuries. Lawrence was not injured in the crash.

Former Kansas State standout Dean Wade has earned the biggest contract of his NBA career.

The free-agent forward agreed to a four-year, $39 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, according to ESPN. Wade spent the first seven seasons of his NBA career with the Cleveland Cavaliers after breaking into the league as an undrafted free agent in 2019.
